Community
Community to me means a big group of people who live in the same area, it also means to me how that same group of people in the same area share the same characteristics and can relate to each other. I just moved to Buffalo to attend University at Buffalo and I live in an apartment complex near Damien college, in the middle of UB’s north and south campus ten minutes away. I think that the people that make the community that I live in are people who attend college. I’ve made friends and talked to many people that live in the same apartment complex as me and we all make a community because we all share the same characteristics of attending school. Community matters to me at this time in history because it keeps things normal considering the conditions, we are living in now with Covid. Communities have changed drastically over the past year because we were all living through a pandemic. There haven’t been many opportunities for people to socialize due to living through a pandemic so people in many communities, weren’t able to practice socializing with those in their community for a year and still going. When people aren’t able to socialize it makes it harder for those to communicate and overall socialize with those that live around them. As well as society, part of life is meeting new people and going to new places to strive in life, but living in a society where we aren’t able to do that anymore because of Covid makes it a lot harder for people in a society to be offered new opportunities that come their way. Although we are all dealing with a pandemic right now, I think that we can all relate a lot more right now on social media, especially TikTok. On TikTok there is something called a for you page which is literally a page dedicated to whatever you like to see on TikTok and the more that you use the app the more the app gets to know you and what you like so that it can expose you the things that you are interested in. I think that there is definitely a community on TikTok and all social media in general. The people who use these apps all have something in common and that is the interest in social media. As well as people opening up about their lives on their feed and other people being able to relate to their content. A way that I get involved in my community is by trying to converse with the people in my community, going walking, and giving back to the community. By doing this I like to donate my clothes, and trying to find things that are going on in the community like flea markets, and other social events. My sister and I like to do these things together which is a lot of fun. Before Covid, my sister and I would go to the art festival in Elmwood and the taste of buffalo event along with so many other events we would attend just to walk around and enjoy the community events. I definitely value the buffalo community because they always have things going on to offer to the people in buffalo and it encourages people to go outside walk around and enjoy the things that people are bringing to the community. Pre-Covid there has been so much to do in buffalo but due to Covid there isn’t much that anyone can do, hopefully, there will be a day soon that Covid isn’t as bad and the community can offer those events again. I think people who participate in community activities can benefit greatly from it, you can meet new people that have the same interests as well as experiencing new activities and seeing what other people’s interests and hobbies are that you can possibly be interested in too.
